Phoenix, AZ, Oct. 23, 2002 - BOScom, the midrange connectivity solutions specialist, reminds IT managers implementing a disaster recovery plan not to forget the special needs of Twinax users. "In most disaster recovery scenarios these days TCP/IP is the protocol of choice for switching between machines," explains Martin Pladgeman, President of BOScom U.S. "Most solutions to switch users from the primary iSeries to the back-up iSeries require that the IP address for the active iSeries be changed. For example, if the production iSeries has IP address 10.1.1.10 while the back-up iSeries normally uses 10.1.1.20, during disaster recovery the back-up IP address switches to 10.1.1.10. This is great for PC users with TN5250 emulation. They do not have to change their settings; they simply restart their sessions and sign back on." "However, Twinax users suffer a harsher plight," Pladgeman elaborates. "During disaster recovery the local Twinax users can be left without any access to the back-up AS/400. Remote Twinax users usually can be switched over using some scripts on the AS/400, however, that is often a challenge." "Fortunately, there is a better way," Pladgeman continues. "IP-based Twinax controllers, like the BOScom e-Twin@x Controller, can easily switch between iSeries systems because they treat Twinax users the same way they treat PC users once the session is reset. As a matter of fact, the e-Twin@x Controller does this automatically. Without operator intervention, users can sign on to the back-up iSeries and continue to work. Even locally attached Twinax users can continue to work in this fashion, using any of the BOScom 47xx local e-Twin@x Controllers."Special Features for Disaster RecoveryBOScom’s e-Twin@x Controller includes several features especially relevant for disaster recovery situations: DNS Look-up: The e-Twin@x Controller can configure the issuers via a DNS name instead of IP address. A timer in the e-Twin@x Controller refreshes the DNS look-up every time it expires. This way, the System Administrator changes the internal DNS server, which lists the iSeries domain name, and after the timer expires, all the devices are automatically changed to the new IP address. Auto Reconnect: With this feature enabled, whenever the connection to the iSeries is lost, the e-Twin@x Controller tries to re-establish the connection without user intervention. Default Rollover: Two iSeries systems can be configured to act as default and back-up, respectively. When the primary (default) iSeries can no longer be accessed, the e-Twin@x Controller automatically attempts to connect to the secondary (back-up) issuers. After successful connection to the back-up, it will stay connected to that system until the e-Twin@x Controller is reset, which can be done by using a Web browser. The system administrator can define that the process be reversed if the first host is also defined as a back-up system for the second. In this case, if the backup system fails or if the TCP/IP interface is terminated, all sessions will be re-connected to the primary system.About B.O.S.
