B.O.S. Better On-line Solutions Demos
e-Twin@x™ Controller at COMMON Expo

Connects up to 112 twinax devices to local and remote AS/400s

San Francisco, March 7, 1999 - Here at the COMMON Expo this week, B.O.S. Better On-line Solutions (NASDAQ: BOSCF) is demonstrating its newest product, the e-Twin@x™ Controller, which will begin shipping in the second quarter. The new hardware/software product uses the same e-Twin@x feature that BOS is now shipping as an enhancement to its TCP/IP 5250 emulation software. Both the e-Twin@x software and the e-Twin@x Controller are being demonstrated at the BOS education booth, #1217.

"The e-Twin@x controller will provide a way for any user to run email, Microsoft Networking, Lotus Notes, etc on any BOS, IBM, or IBM-compatible twinax card connected to virtually any AS/400," explained Martin Pladgeman, President of B.O.S. USA (Scottsdale, AZ).

"The e-Twin@x Controller is the solution for companies that need to have the benefits of a LAN on their existing twinax infrastructure without upgrading to V4R2 and without the additional AS/400 overhead of routing IP over twinax." Pladgeman continued. "The e-Twin@x Controller allows local site twinax users to integrate into an existing LAN environment, or remote site twinax users to convert mixed 'dumb' and PC devices into a WAN (Wide Area Network). This will allow remote users to access file servers on the local LAN, resulting in cost savings for remote users since this solution allows VPN (Virtual Private Networking) to be implemented across the Internet."

About the BOS e-Twin@x Controller

Up to 112 twinax devices can be connected to either local or remote AS/400s (WAN-connected) through the new 16-port BOS e-Twin@x Controller. Both dumb terminals and twinax printers can be on the same line with Windows 95/98/NT PCs. Other key features include:
  • A built-in 4-port Remote Access Server, complete with AS/400 client RAS software, allows connected devices to dial out to the Internet and in to the LAN. It supports modem sharing for a fax pool. For security, the RAS includes a built-in firewall and RADIUS software (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service).
  • Compact 1U communications controller fits into standard 19" rack mount communications cabinets
  • Express cards (currently supplied by IBM and BOS only) will run 4x as fast in all configurations. Currently, IBM supports Express 2Mps performance only when all the devices on the line are Express cards. Even if all devices but one support Express, then the whole line defaults back to 1Mps. No such limitation exists with BOS' solution - 2Mps is supported with any mix of devices.
  • BOS' "compressed mode" provides up to 20x faster performance than standard twinax cards on an IBM controller or AS/400.

Operating requirements for the e-Twin@x Controller are OS/400 V3R2 or above; Windows 95/98/NT on the PCs; an Ethernet LAN connection; BOS, IBM or IBM-compatible adapters, and BOSâNOVA Plus V4.1 or BOSâNOVA TCP/IP V4.1, or IBM TCP/IP drivers (IBM drivers do not support BOS compression).

BOS develops, produces, and markets solutions for IBM midrange-to-PC and LAN connectivity, including Internet/intranet, emulation, gateways, and GUI. Innovative technologies have positioned BOS as an important player in the IBM midrange connectivity field. The company's Lynk subsidiary specializes in remote LAN and telephony access solutions, and its Surf Communication Solutions affiliate develops software implementations of modem protocols for the telephone network. The company's stock is traded on Nasdaq under the symbol BOSCF.
