By creating a secured, large bandwidth over the Internet, the e-Twin@x Controller eliminates the need for dedicated, expensive SNA leased lines Teradyon, July 13, 1999 - B.O.S. Better On-line Solutions (NASDAQ: BOSCF) announced that is it now shipping a new version of its e-Twin@x Controller, demonstrated earlier this year at the COMMON Expo in San Francisco, CA. This hardware/software product provides a secure method for any Twinax-attached PC to run email, Microsoft Networking, Lotus Notes, etc. on any BOS, IBM, or IBM-compatible twinax card connected to virtually any AS/400, and allows multiple dumb terminals and Twinax printers to coexist with Windows 95/98/NT PCs on the same network. With the new functionality, organizations can now create a 5250 Virtual Private Network over the Internet with the Controller, using modems attached to the Controller's built-in Remote Access Server (RAS), or via a fixed or leased line to a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). The breakthrough gives BOS' e-Twin@x Controller a distinct advantage in the Remote Controller market; a market whose annual revenues top $100,000,000 and whose installed base is valued at approximately $500,000,000. "We expect to see rapid acceptance in the market for the e-Twin@x Controller. Any organization which currently has an SNA-only (SDLC) connection from the AS/400 to its remote site, and which spends in excess of $400 in long distance leased line costs per month, will realize immediate savings, thanks to this new functionality," claims Israel ("Izzy") Gal, CEO of B.O.S. "Instead of dialing long distance to reach the host," Gal continues, "the user simply dials a local ISP, which initiates the connection to the AS/400." System administrators need not worry about the security of their data. Messages are encrypted using industry-standard algorithms and sent to the SECURIT-e Serverä (a Java-based program developed by BOS and provided with the Controller), which runs at the main AS/400 site. The server deciphers the messages and sends them on to any pre-defined AS/400. Each modem can be configured to call to a different or the same ISP; this provides extra bandwidth and extra resilience. "The benefit of this method", claims Gal, "is that if for any reason the ISP connection is lost, then the Controller will use whichever of the connections are still active. The Controller will try to reconnect the failed line without user intervention, and in most cases the user will not even know that there is a problem."
About B.O.S. Better On-Line SolutionsBOS creates innovative and powerful solutions for seamless integration of PCs and LANs into the midrange host environment. The Company designs, develops, manufactures, markets and supports superior products that provide efficient solutions to PC connectivity challenges in the AS/400 environment.Reflecting strategic expansion into growing communication markets, BOS established Lynk in 1995, which develops and supplies high-quality, end-to-end IP telephony and remote access solutions for the corporate market. In October 1997, the Company purchased a percentage of Surf Communication Solutions Ltd., a software solutions developer for access products that are integrated into telecommunication systems and electronic consumer goods. In June 1998 BOS acquired Pacific Information Systems, a rapidly growing, privately owned reseller of ISP, networking, and high-performance PC products headquartered in Portland, Oregon. The acquisition has provided a significant boost to BOS' distribution capabilities in North America. Current efforts at BOS are focused on web-based emulations, multi-platform electronic forms design and management, remote controller solutions, IP Telephony and other remote access products of the Lynk subsidiary, and the development of products which integrate the cutting edge software modem technology of Surf Communication Solutions Ltd., the company's affiliate.
